"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier
"Μολὼν λαβέ" -- Leonidas
"Blogito Ergo Sum" -- Neptunus Lex
For the LaFon family, my condolences. But rest assured, the inspiration Lex engendered lives on.
It is good to see so many of the old names of his community porch posting here still.
Took my office on a tour of USS GEORGE H W BUSH today and wouldn’t you know, the skipper’s name is “Lex” – Lex, you are everywhere! I stood out on the flight deck…thinking about you and our occasional FOD walk-downs (when I could convince you to come). Good times! The photos from Wednesday’s gathering looked great – wish I could have been there. You were honored well!
Thank you and to Stephen A. for extending the invite. Big Bro (USS SeaWolf, SSN-575) is going into round three of chemo and I can’t take leave time away from checking on him for anything else right now, even this.
I was there in spirit, and hope that everything Lex brought to this world, continues on through his family and these gatherings of souls.
B.
I miss you Lex. I never met you but your writing touched me. A tear has left each eye as I type this as testimony to that notion. I never served as you did but I once, as a young man, had designs on that and therein lies the attraction. You taught me much about the Navy and Aviation and that I should have tried it. And regret that I didn’t. Alas, it’s all for naught now. A year has passed yet your community carries on though the tears rise again. So, I raise a toast to you for inspiration. For education. And for brevity. And strength and courage of course. God speed Lex! I didn’t understand our connection but thank you sir, for making us smarter and making us laugh.
(my facebook posting of the same)
I am thankful to see old friends and meet new ones at Shakespeare’s the other night..And to see that Mary and Biscuit are doing so well..and to see all the friends here, once again..Driving home Wednesday night..filled with joy, at the thought so many are still holding Lex in our hearts..we are not alone..
I miss reading his entries here every day. I still use this as my daily portal. It seemed to me sometimes that he was the most sane man on the Internet, and he held back very little of what he shared with us. I can’t make it out to Shakespeare’s from Chicago, but I can have a glass of Guiness – for strength! – in his honor. God blessed you with having him as a father and spouse. May God continue to bless you all.
Ah! I saw this but too late! Training and deployment have their downsides I guess. ‘Twas only for a quick glimpse at some old St. Paddy’s posts of year’s past that I happened to stop by these humble digs.
Guinness – for strength!
Jameson – for courage!
Happy St. Pat’s Day, to Lex and company!
Lex- you are missed and remembered.
Lex left a profound impact on all those that he touched virtually and those that had the pleasure of meeting him in person. I share the sentiment with all those here that we both appreciated the man he was and the legacy he left. We all miss him and extend our best to Mary and the rest of the family.
Just a quick note before this post locks up, to say how much I miss Lex and how much I miss all of you. We have what we have elsewhere on Facebook and The Lexicans, but it’s kind of like being on perpetual det away from homeplate. There’s no ready room like the one back at squadron spaces, and this one is unsurpassed.
Thanks to everyone for the many enjoyable hours down many a rabbit hole. Alice never had it so good.
Thanks to the LeFon family for keeping this blog alive, and for being courageous enough to allow us into your personal and private lives. It means everything to me, and, I’m sure, to all who attend here. I pray God’s choicest blessings be poured out upon you daily, as He guides you through your mortal journey. We joke about Guinness and Jameson’s for strength and courage (well, maybe we do), but we know their true source.
Most of all, thanks to Lex for giving birth and momentum to a place where people can come and enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship of so many great and wonderful souls. I can only imagine the new conversations he started, once checked in to his new duty station surrounded by family and friends.
Til next, when Quarters is sounded!
