Easy Listening
My wife gave me an iPod Nano for Christmas last year. I’m an Apple-phile, so no ordinary mp3 player would do. I have the 4GB (Product)red version, so I can listen to my music and my social conscience is clear. Or something like that. Anyway, at last count I have a measly, compared to my siblings, 572 songs on it, leaving around 1.35GB (give or take) available. I use the “shuffle songs†feature almost exclusively as I listen to it on my walk to and from the train station on work days. I work in downtown Chicago, and on most days as I head east from the station and toward the lake I walk along with the same gaggle of other commuters as they head off to wherever they’re going, most with their own headphones on. The thought does cross my mind as to what they’re listening to as I slowly destroy my hearing with my own music.Â
Today was an especially eclectic day, music-wise. So for most of my commute this morning, I heard the following songs, in this order:
- Us and Them, Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon
- That’ll be the Day, Buddy Holly & The Crickets
- Back in the U.S.S.R., The Beatles, The White Album
- Black Coffee in Bed, Squeeze, Singles 45 and Under
- Black Wind Blowing, Billy Bragg & Wilco, Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2
- Synchronicity II, The Police, Sychronicity
- The Tale of Dusty & Pistol Pete, Smashing Pumpkins, Adore
- Numb, U2, Zooropa
- Lithium, Nirvana, Nevermind
- Level, The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers
- Ring of Fire, Johnny Cash
-
I’m Shipping up to Boston, Dropkick Murphys, Soundtrack from the movie “The Departedâ€
Interesting. What’s in your music player?

“Joe knows how to live” Eddy Raven
“Packard Goose” Frank Zappa
“Countdown” Rush
“Beaches of Ol’ Mexico” George Strait
“Floridays” J. Buffett
“Big Log” Robert Plant
I like to be eclectic. Especially on I-10 when going end to end.

Excellent selections. I was given a bunch of iTunes gift cards for my recent birthday so I think I’ll be doing some more downloading over the weekend. Thanks!

Several of my good friends pitched in to get me an 80GB iPod which is a HUGE change from the 4GB mini that I originally had. So I need to take a day and upload the rest of my CD collection to my new iPod.
And then, with the remaining 75GB of space, I can figure out what to do with the rest of it!

Much to the wife’s chagrin, my nano is pretty much a digital catalog of everything Phil Collins has ever recorded, including most of the post ’77 Genesis catalog. And everything Allison Krauss has recorded since the early 90s. I loves me some good bluegrass.
SJS: Asia and Journey? Nice. I gots lotsa that too, with a smattering of Supertramp and Rush to keep up my “retro-cool cred”.
