A Tribute to Lex
Ok, this is my first attempt to post on the Flight Deck, so I hope this all works out.
For those of us who have been reading the good Captain’s blog for awhile now, we learned that he recently celebrated his retirement from active duty after a mere 26 years. Forgoing the usual dog-and-pony show, he elected to commemorate his parting by getting together with a few shipmates at a local pub, where they do indeed serve up a fine pint of Guinness.
I was fortunate enough to live close by, and was able to attend some of the festivities – though I’m sure my late arrival caused me to miss a good many of the inevitable sea stories. BTW – I did finally learn how he came by the “Lex” moniker – it would make a good story for him to share… hint, hint.
Well, ever since I’d first heard the rumors about his retirement, I decided to do some small part to honor his time spent in the service of our country. Having some (small) talent in drawing, I’d discovered years ago that people appreciate a nicely done caricature. I thought this would be a much more appropriate gesture than another plaque or ginormous shadow box. Knowing that Lex would be far too modest to post this on his main page, I thought I would take the opportunity to share it with the rest of you who weren’t able to make it, so that you could also add your comments/farewell thoughts on the occasion of Lex’s retirement.

Maj Harvery, Lex has shared that story on his callsign, which I agree is great. It can be found here.

I envy you joining the crew with the Guinesses. So what can I say? Great picture, a very nice tribute.
Strange to see his real name though, eh? Actually one thing I’ve often wondered … I have always thought of Lex as ‘Lex’, of course. Can’t imagine anyone calling him anything other than Lex, Captain or Sir. Definitely can’t picture anyone calling him Carroll.

We, by which I mean all us knuckleheads, nautical and otherwise, need to pay homage to Lex. Imagine, if you will, how and where Nose and Snake and Badbob and Zane and Byron and Max and FBL and Michelle and Drew C and MissBirdlegs and Jimmy J and SJBill and Grumpy and blackeagle603 etc etc would have met without the good captain’s intervention.
Captain Lex has presided over a confluence of Bullshit the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Congress of Vienna.
And I thank Wodin I was able to witness most of it.

MajHarvey, As someone who couldn’t catch a football ( when it really mattered) carry a tune or draw anything regognizable but otherwise has a keen eye for most activities well executed …I say very well done and… BZ( that’s Navy lingo…Lex Babes ).
Craig, I would submit that Lex is acting more like the captain of a ship of fools…however lovable…present company, of course excluded.

Maj. Harvey, BZ (I KNEW that Snarkey Snakey)! I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler, so am very impressed that anyone can draw something recognizable.
Good call, Craig – Have to admit I often picture Lex laughing & shaking his head at some of our/my more inane and insane comments…

Don’t know if you noticed, but if you zoom in on the cockpit, I believe you can clearly make out a piddle pack behind Lex’s shoulder – after some of his previous “overpressure warning” stories, I figured he might need one…

Drinking and driving? Is this why he needed extra piddle-pack capacity?
Nice job on the drawing. I’m sure Lex will treasure it.
By the way, the good Captain’s full name is fairly easy to find via internet search.
