USS George Washington

Just read the Fox News article about the fire on the Washington.  Relieved the CO and XO for a $70 million dollar fire.  One would have thought the sailor(s) who caused the fire would have known about the prohibition on smoking, especially where flammable liquid was stored.  Some questions:

1. Why or How were such liquids permitted to be sloshing around on the deck or stored in containers that leaked?

2. Who inspected the space before the fire?  Why didn’t they note the condition of containers, or the generally poor cleanliness of the space?

3. Where was the Chief and why was he/she not staying close to the division/work center crew to suspect the sailor(s) would do such a stupid thing?

This is a shame. And, hopefully, there will be consequences down the line to those you mentioned, as well.

Career success is often attributable as much to the “grace of God” as anything else.

I sure hope the CMC of the GW retires early or turns in his/her Command pin following the departure of the CO and XO. No doubt any of the good things that happened on the CMC’s watch would gloriously make it into an eval but something like this isn’t even mentioned.
I guess ending two naval officer’s careers is somehow justified. God forbid we take a glorified E-9 down with them.

My daughter is on the Washington it just make me sick that the whole fire could have been avoided if someone had done their job. This whole thing could have had serious outcomes. I almost had a heart attack from all the worry. I just hope who ever is responsible pays for what happened. I have always taken great pride in a job well done. The younger people need to learn this.

When Rat W. commanded a fighter squadron in the late 80’s I remember his outfit lost 2 expensive Tomcats in 1 month or less…during workups.

He’s now a 4-star.

I am sure the investigation was thorough and the facts warranted firing from standards of conduct I have never had the privilege to administer…however…

In regards to the “storage” issue, we “Black Shoes” have a custom which goes a long way towards preventing such problems. It’s called “Zone Inspections.” The Divo, LCPO and LPO should live in mortal fear of having the CO or XO discover a discrepancy like that. It tends to make them make frequent rounds of their spaces to check on things. As far as the sailor smoking is concerned, sometimes sailors just do s$%t that they are not supposed to. That’s what Captain’s Mast is for.
Unless things have changed dramatically, the Chain of Command runs CO-XO-Dept Head-DIVO-LCPO-LPO-WCS-sailor. The CMC isn’t listed there. He’s an “Administrative Assistant” reporting to the XO and CO kind of like the 3M COORD and such.
