It’s hard to explain why we fly to those who have never tried to understand. It is an activity that is at once both lethal in speed and altitude. It’s costly. It takes effort.
You have flown for the trip for all the right reasons. Because it IS fun. Because you can.
I’ve tried to explain cave and shipwreck diving to non divers and again there is no logic that applies.

Nice story. Some of my best flights are long cross country trips with fellow pilots (although I sometimes fly with a wonderful, tolerant wife who has put up with me for 30 years). It’s not to get anywhere, really. Possibly a golf destination. It’’s the journey that’s the reward.

Flight(s) were Ok. Being limited to VFR was a challenge (equipment limitation not pilot) was a challnge as a frontal system from the Gulf that extended to Canada blocked progress. Saw via lightning flashes plenty of evidence of imbeeded boomers which are no place to venture near in any plane let alone one that grosses out at 1500 lbs. Spent hours probing up and down to no effect. Bagged it and spent Christmas Eve in the Opryland Hotel (nice decorations) sampling various libations and educating my nephew in finer points of single malts. Christmas dawned CAVU and enjoyed final 2 hour leg to arrive just in time for nice Christamas dinner.

Return was uneventful other than 60 knot headwinds initially that abated as I approcahed the Lone Star State.

There are few practical reasons to travel in this manner but not having to take your shoes off and enjoying the indignities of having your luggaged unpacked in front of strangers makes it worthwhile all by itself.
