High-Tech Blimps Earning Their Wings
The US Army this week showed off its latest high-tech blimp laden with powerful radar systems capable of detecting incoming threats 340 miles away.
The helium-filled blimps or aerostats are designed to hover over war zones or high-security areas and be on guard for incoming missiles or other threats. The Army wants them to reduce some of the need manned and unmanned reconnaissance flights.

I’ve been advocating for those things since my days as a young 1/lt in Vietnam. Glad to see that my “brilliant” mind is finally being vindicated.
Better late than never I guess, but what took so long? Seemed like a no brainer to me–even with the state of the art way back then…

My guess is that the sensor suites and communication capabilities are finally catching up. But that’s a wag – don’t know enough about it myself but found the whole thing to be pretty interesting.
