So, when you allow open registration on a blog, all kinds of bugs can creep in through the cracks. They don’t get posting privileges – ergo, access to my database – until I’ve upgraded their status from “contributor” to “editor.” Because you don’t want just anyone putting stuff up on your little slice of the internets.

If I don’t recognize the handle from comments, or if the email address under which the registration was made seems screwy, I delete the login from the admin panel. If you’ve registered and can’t get access to post and think you ought to be able to, please send me a PM to remind me who you are and we’ll open the gates.

Upgraded

We’ve just upgraded the back end to WordPress 2.2.1, in case you can’t tell. I don’t know that you’ll see many significant changes to your user interface, but do drop me a note is something isn’t just the way it ought to be.

Should be a bit snappier on the front end load, and if you want to preview a post before submitting it you’ll see a “Preview” link at the top right of the post once you’ve hit “Save and Continue Editing” – it used to auto-preview, but that took time and sometimes hung up.

Oh, and just by the way – if you’re going to excerpt or quote extensively from another person’s post for analysis purposes, please remember to use the “Blockquote” feature, as well as sending a trackback. Under the emerging “fair use” standard in the blogosphere, if you’re going to use anything more than about half the other person’s post you ought to just link to it instead.

Test Drive a New Blogsite

Well, I’ve decided that as long as I’m going to keep doing this blogging thing, I may as well go all the way. Ergo, I’ve been working on a new site (many thanks to Curt for his help and encouragement along the way) and would like to get the comments of the esteemed assemblage at The Flight Deck before breaking my pennant aboard her…Â So, if you all would like a sneak peak, head over to http://steeljawscribe.com/wordpressand try it out.Â I’m interested to see how it replicates on a variety of displays and speeds (for reference I built it using Firefox 2.0 on a widescreen Vista-machine and have cross-checked with a standard format screen, 1024-type, in Windows 2K w/Exploder6).Â probably will rollout after final tweaks an all in another two weeks (hmm, just about time for the Battle of the Philippine Sea…)Â Also may have another announcement upcoming that could be a big help in this fall’s VALOUR-IT fund drive…

Blog tips – Embedding videos

FbL has been helping the newer bloggers among us in shortcuts and techniques. There’s a quirk even she might not know about in embedding video. It’s not as easy as it used to be since WP2.1 came out – a lot of plug-ins got orphaned by the fairly comprehensive code re-write.

It’s not impossible, though. Those wanting to put up video from Google or YouTube must navigate to the “Users” tab in the Dashboard, select “Your Profile” on that page, un-check “Use the visual editor when writing” and finally, save the changes by selecting the “Update Profile>>” button. From there, it’s relatively straightforward – there are a set of video link buttons on the “Write Post” page that require you to type in the video source code (for example, “uDAPOM–cCk” in the French Army professional excellence demonstration that Brian linked to below) and poof! You’re done.

Afterwards you can go back and re-edit your user profile to get back into the visual editor if you prefer not to work with html code. And of course, you can always just put some text in there and hyperlink to the url. Which, when you put it that way? Makes me feel like kind of a geek.

Have I thanked you all for the very generous pints of Guinness I consumed yesterday? I waited until after I’d gotten back from heaving stacks around at the gym. Really diggin’ that NCAA basketball tournement too. Really. And for the record? Chargers are going the distance this year.
