It has been a remarkably mild winter, in Sandy Eggo.
Fallon, Nevada, we are reminded, is not Sandy Eggo.
Also! I’ve a 0515 brief this morning, followed by a 0700 launch. Two flights today, the second lands at 1600 or so.
I remembered something of a love/hate relationship with the halls of the (prestigious) [...]
There’s a growing body of evidence which suggests that an “eight straight” sleep cycle is not so natural as we had been led to assume:
In 2001, historian Roger Ekirch of Virginia Tech published a seminal paper, drawn from 16 years of research, revealing a wealth of historical evidence that humans used to sleep [...]
When I read this post from the Prof on the issue of Starbucks becoming the darling of American gun owners, I kind of had this image in mind.
Or maybe this one.
Turns out, no.
It was the other one.
Today promises to be a busy morning, with all manner of Actual Things To Do. You’re going to have to keep the plates spinning just a little longer, if you don’t mind.
In case anyone is at a loss to get the convo started – an unlikely possibility, I know – there’s an interesting [...]
Eleven sounds your kids have probably never heard.
I was good for all eleven, although the cash register was already anachronistic the one time I did hear it. On the way back from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I was maybe 13.
They can make for great partners, in life.
Enjoy the barbie.
And thanks for, well… everything.
There was a crescent moon tonight over NAS Fallon. Not as who should say a “commander’s moon,” far less one issued to a retired captain. But a moon nonetheless. Which, when coupled with a sky completely innocent of cloud cover and with visibilities unlimited, made for an entirely different experience during the evening go.

Wintertime fun in Finland.
My experience was very different.
The French are once again stifling the animal spirits of the free market with the dead hand of l’etat:
Sales of petrol and other combustibles will be limited on New Year’s Eve in a bid to curb what has become an annual tradition of revellers (sic) torching hundreds of cars, police said.

Credo "Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier
